Telesimulation
Telemedicine Advocacy
As is defined in the Healthcare Simulation Dictionary, telesimulation is "... a novel concept that uses the internet to link simulators between an instructor and a trainee in different locations." Telesimulation enables a larger number of learners and learner groups to benefit from the valuable skills obtains and honed during healthcare simulation exercises.
ASTEC has long been an advocate for the importance and impact of telesimulation. Though the practice of telesimulation grew alongside the Covid-19 pandemic, ASTEC has been contributing to the study of this field for many years. Below is a sampling of ASTEC's research and telesimulation projects and partnerships. If you are interested in collaborating with ASTEC on a telesimulation endeavor, please completed and submit a simulation request.
Telemedicine Technologies
ASTEC has recently moved forward with an exciting telemedicine program and expanded partnership with the Arizona Telemedicine Program. This new program provides a first-of-its-kind Telehealth Simulation Training Suite (TSTS) within the ASTEC facility. The TSTS will familiarize healthcare professional students with the technology used to support remote telehealth (TH) and contribute to their development of skills associated with core competencies of providing care via telehealth. The TSTS will provide students the opportunity to learn how to use remote healthcare technology and instrumentation. By using these technologies to interview and examine standardized patients (SPs) in a wide variety of simulated scenarios, learners will be able to assess and test their abilities. SPs will be used to simulate a host of disease presentations, physical findings, and diagnoses. They will also present a wide selection of behavioral, social, and cultural issues that students are likely to encounter while practicing medicine or delivering healthcare in the Southwest. Students will become familiar with the current diagnostic capabilities of TH in specific subspecialty areas and explore its capabilities as a method for obtaining quick subspecialty consultation and expertise.
The TSTS is supported by state-of-the-art technology, including the GlobalMed eNcounter® Virtual Healthcare Platform. eNcounter is a virtual healthcare software platform that operates across the acuity spectrum, enabling video conferencing in multiple scenarios. This allows real-time medical data sharing of, images, device reports, auscultation sounds, and live video from connected exam cameras. eNcounter also allows for patient self-scheduling, document management, and ePrescribe for prescription management.

Arizona Telemedicine Program Partnership
Since opening in 2004, ASTEC has partnered frequently with the Arizona Telemedicine Program (ATP). The ATP has been a great supporter of telesimulation and we encourage everyone to learn more about their initiatives. The ATP's former Executive Director, Dr. Ronald Weinstein was a great champion for the value of simulation, both virtually and in-person, and he will be greatly missed by the ASTEC team and community.
