ABOUT
ASTEC opened in 2005 under the leadership of Dr. Allan Hamilton. ASTEC was originally located in the Department of Surgery and occupied only 425 sq. ft.! By 2011, the demand for healthcare simulation grew so much that the lab moved to a larger, 2,400 sq. ft. space in the College of Medicine. The desire to teach through simulation has only accelerated since then, and in 2019 ASTEC relocated to the newly constructed Health Sciences Innovation Building (HSIB). ASTEC's new, state-of-the-art home occupies 35,000 sq. ft- the entire 7th floor of the HSIB!
Since it's opening in 2005, ASTEC has continually improved patient safety through education and research. ASTEC now services all University of Arizona Health Sciences colleges and multiple healthcare-adjacent disciplines across the University of Arizona campus, as well as Banner University Medical Center and many other healthcare organizations throughout Arizona.
