Interprofessional Education

Interprofessional education (IPE) plays an important role in completing a student's healthcare learning journey.  ASTEC is proud to provide a variety of IPE simulations, all of which are available to any UArizona Health Sciences student.

See below for examples of the IPE activities offered at ASTEC.  Availability varies by semester.

Please note the list below may not be comprehensive.  Activity availability varies by semester.

Caring for the Caregivers

Unlock the power of self-care in healthcare. Stress reduction techniques provide students with a comprehensive approach to self-care through simulation-based exercises.

Code Blue!

Time is muscle- what will you do when you hear the word “STEMI”? Find out with an advanced human patient simulator experiencing a code blue emergency.

Do you smell smoke?

Join ASTEC’s Executive Director and Regents Professor of Surgery, Allan Hamilton, MD, as you stretch your ability to improvise during this mystery simulation exercise.

The EDI of IPE

Confront your own unconscious biases and explore how interprofessional teams can support the individualized needs of patients facing systemic bias and structural barriers.

Hamilton Tile Game

Join ASTEC’s Executive Director and Regents Professor of Surgery, Allan Hamilton, MD, as your team assess their strengths and weaknesses by working together to escape a jungle swamp full of toxic tiles.

Heartless

If you came across one of the thousands of people living life without a pulse, would you know what to do? Learn how to recognize and manage the nuances of patients living with left ventricular assist devices.

House of Horrors

Uncover hidden faults that compromise patient safety and staff efficiency within a hospital room.

Intentional Equity and Inclusion

Explore bias, de-escalation techniques, and asking sensitive questions while using an advanced human patient simulator to perform a thorough patient assessment.

Lego Land, Lego Band

Join ASTEC’s Executive Director and Regents Professor of Surgery, Allan Hamilton, MD, for a creative exploration of the foundational, interprofessional skills needed to be successful in healthcare.

Little Things Matter

Navigate the 360-degree environment of a neonatal intensive care unit. Using a neonatal advanced patient simulator, learn about the unique setting, equipment, delivery of care, and interdisciplinary teams needed to ensure that the littlest patients thrive.

Mighty Egg Drop

You and your team will construct a “bomb proof” egg package to guarantee egg's safety when dropped. You will prove the worthiness of your design by subjecting your egg to a 12-foot fall!

Medical Mystery

Crack the code to treat this patient's mystery illness. An interprofessional team is the only way to treat and save the advanced human patient simulator used in this simulation.

Shots Fired

Healthcare staff are at the highest risk for workplace violence. This interprofessional simulation will help learners to stay safe when everything goes wrong.

Simulation Relay

Try to beat the clock while gaining experience with human patient simulators, task trainers and other healthcare equipment not encountered in your day-to-day education.

Suicide Crisis Response

Depression and feelings of helplessness are on the rise. Learn how to treat the whole patient when they come to the emergency department experiencing these symptoms.

Sugar Rush

Recognize and educate your pediatric patient with new onset Type 1 Diabetes.

To Infinity and Beyond

With only one ream of paper, your entire team, spread across the ASTEC Sim Deck, must communicate a message using only paper airplanes.

Toxic Waste

With only two pieces of rope, your team must move five buckets of simulated toxic waste from one side of the room to the other without spilling!

Venom 101

In the Sonoran Desert, people and creatures cross paths, sometimes with dangerous results. In this simulation, an interdisciplinary team will provide clinical management for patients presenting with venomous bites.

When Accidents Happen

The three definitions of drowning: drowning with death, drowning with deficit, and drowning without deficit. Maximize survival and decrease poor outcomes in this simulation utilizing a pediatric advanced human patient simulator.

When Tempers Rise

Practice skills in de-escalation to diffuse conflict in the hospital. Explore ways to minimize restraints and physical harm.
